Re:
We have to work together to stop child sexual abuse,
The Standard, March 31
I
understand that child rape, child sexual molestation,
exploitation and abuse is a crime in Canada. Why then
can the very images of these crimes be channeled freely
through our Internet providers? Do we care at all about
these victims of crime?
I
agree with Janet Gritter in her letter, stating, "It's
vital Internet Service Providers (ISP) filter all the
network traffic of a computer.
"
Sharing
sexual abuse images of children through ISPs has a profound
impact on the viewers. It is a crime that we allow this
at all. Are we, as a community, ready to stand up and
defend our defenceless, sexually-abused children? Will
we pressure the government, both locally and federally,
to regulate the ISPs to stop channeling these images
of crime?
The
Town of Lincoln, Town of Pelham and City of St. Catharines
have a bylaw in their hands that could do this very
thing. Will they protect our children? Two other Ontario
municipalities have already implemented this bylaw.
As
a community, we are responsible for the safety of our
children, and they have a right to be protected by the
adults around them, not exploited or ignored.
