Calgary: Canadians are getting an education
on "entitlement" mentality today. In response
to information that the government is planning a narrower
and stricter standard for giving tax dollar grants and
tax credits to the film industry has outraged left wing
people who live off taxpayers.
Brian Rushfeldt Executive Director of
Canada Family Action Coalition said that the argument
that filmmakers and some media industry have a Charter
Right to be funded and given tax breaks exposes years
of liberal entitlement mentality. He went on to say,
"Let them argue this one before the public, ask
the taxpayer in the next election, if they want to spend
1.5 million dollars for a film called Young People
F***..ing - a pornographic film that even some
Toronto Film Festival people thought questionable. Cronenberg
and his friends will lose that argument and the one
about their Charter right to be funded.
"Accusations that this is about
censorship are ludicrous. There is no law that says
they cannot produce whatever perverted movie they want
to. They have been doing that. But this is about asking
families to take money out their budget so David Cronenberg
and other artists can have a paycheck,"
said Rushfeldt.
This is about responsible use of tax
dollars. It is about an industry being required to produce
a product that paying customers want or get out of the
business like the rest of the free market operates.
Voters in the next election will appreciate cutting
items like this out of the budget.
Telefilm Canada is a government body
who has a very large budget and then funnels that tax
money to whomever they chose. "Let us stop funding
that industry at all if we cannot have a proper line
drawn for decency. We are not asking for censorship
of any movie - we are asking to stop using taxpayers
money for an industry that produces products that are
offensive and no one buys," said Rushfeldt. Reportedly
around $150 million gets glad-handed to the film industry.
Members of Parliament have a Constitutional
requirement to use tax money wisely and to avoid giving
money to industries that continue to fail to become
self-sufficient. We ask the government to review ALL
expenditures to ensure Canadians get good return on
their investment and economic viability good for the
Canadian economy.
