"It's
truly gratifying to see a national poll that agrees with
the majority opinion of my own constituents."
Ottawa
- Garry Breitkreuz, MP for Yorkton-Melville, got a great
boost from a national poll that validated every one of
his pro-life legislative initiatives. "This is the
most encouraging news the pro-life movement has had in
a long time. My colleagues on the Parliamentary Pro-Life
Caucus will be discussing ways to advance the legislative
agenda based on these new poll results," said Breitkreuz.
Breitkreuz was talking about the most recent poll conducted
by Leger Marketing of Montreal on behalf of Live Canada/Vie
Canada of Ottawa and released just yesterday.
Leger
surveyed between 1,505 and 1,882 Canadians in October.
The poll has a margin of error of 2.3% to 2.5% 19 times
out of 20 and discovered that:
-
69% of Canadians favour informed consent legislation
on abortion.
- 63%
of Canadians favour legal protection of human life before
birth.
- 68%
said abortions should either be privately funded or
only funded in medical emergencies, and
- 70%
of Canadians either disagreed with using embryos for
stem cell research or using sources of stem cells that
do not destroy the embryos.

"These
poll results showing 69% support for informed consent
legislation will be very useful when my Private Members'
Motion M-482 comes up for debate in the House of Commons,"
said Breitkreuz. His newest legislative initiative calls
for a "Woman's Right to Know Act" that would
make sure that laws are in place to guarantee every mother
is fully informed by their doctors of all the risks before
they decide to abort their baby.
The
Life Canada poll results also showed there is strong public
support for Breitkreuz's 2003 motion to determine if abortions
are medically necessary, is 2002 and 2001 motions on Definition
of a Human Being, and his 1997 motion on de-funding of
abortion. See teh articles below for more details:
