Paul
Martin's demand for an apology on the Conservative comments
about the record of Martin and the Liberals on the child
porn issue is nothing more than an attempt to distract
the voters from the shameful Liberal track record, states
Executive Director of Canada Family Action Coalition,
Brian Rushfeldt. Rushfeldt went on to say "If anyone
should be apologizing, it should be Paul Martin and the
Liberals apologizing to every parent and child in the
nation. Mr. Martin was one of 181 MPs who refused to take
any immediate action on protecting children when they
had an opportunity in Parliament. When motions to strengthen
porn laws, remove defences for pornographers, set harsher
more protective sentences and create a proper and useful
sex offender registry came to Parliament, the Liberals
rejected them and defeated them. And then they delayed
their so called child protection legislation so long it
died. They have done NOTHING." CFAC President, Charles
McVety, adds, "It is a national disgrace that internationally,
Canada is considered a safe haven for pedophiles and child
pornographers. Bad laws, lenient sentencing by judges,
and a lack of resources from law enforcement has contributed
to this disgrace. It is the responsibility of government
to protect our children from sexual predators, and the
Liberals have clearly failed in their responsibility."
The
Liberals also insisted on including a legal defence for
child pornography in the Criminal Code. Though they boasted
about eliminating the artistic merit defence, they added
an even worse defence -- so called 'public good.' Mr.
Rushfeldt says, "The reality is that every piece
of vile child porn means a violated and abused child.
There can be NO public good from this sick and perverted
stuff."
Canada Family Action Coalition led efforts that resulted
in over one million Canadians petitioning the government
to take action to fix the ineffective child porn laws.
"The Liberal government has continued to ignore the
Canadian people. Canadians should be asking, What kind
of values does a person hold that would keep him or her
from doing everything possible to protect innocent children?
Mr. Martin talks about Canadian values -- but what values
allow for the abuse and violation of children? Certainly
not the values of most Canadians. Mr. Martin's record
speaks for itself. He voted against several motions. And
though the Liberals have been in power for many years,
they have failed to pass any corrective legislation.
For a list of MPs who refused to pass legislation to protect
children see www.familyaction.org .
This issue is raised, at this time, not by a Liberal party
who cares about children, but because of a despicable
and horrible circumstance of a child's death. Now some
party leaders want to criticize people who want greater
protection for children, rather than solving the problem.
"Canadians - you ought to ask why this is so",
suggest Rushfeldt.
On Canada Day, July 1st, 2004, most Canadians would like
to be able to celebrate a Canada that protects their children.
