Support
Needed for Pro-life Motion in Parliament
On
Thursday March 22, MPs in the House of Commons will
debate an important motion, introduced by Saskatchewan
Alliance MP Garry Breitkreuz, that focuses on the protection
of human life. The motion, M-228, calls on the government
to define in legislation that human life begins at conception.
Should the motion be adopted, the government would be
forced to consider new legislation to protect unborn
humans.
Because
of worldwide developments in the area of new reproductive
technologies (NRTs), and the current American debate
over late-term (partial-birth) abortions, Members of
Parliament have a unique opportunity to renew the continuing
debate over protections for human life. Canada's Health
Minister, Allan Rock, has indicated that he may soon
introduce a bill to regulate NRTs. The passage of Motion
M-228 could influence the direction the government takes
with this sensitive and controversial legislation.
Garry Breitkreuz points out that the Liberal Government
has been keeping a double standard with its continued
failure to protect the unborn. He points out that the
UN Convention of the Rights of the Child states that
"the child needs special safeguards and care, including
appropriate legal protection, before as well as after
birth." He says that the lack of any law whatsoever
protecting children before birth contradicts the government's
supposed support for the UN Convention.

WHAT
YOU CAN DO:
CFAC
believes there is widespread support for the motion
among backbenchers from most of the parties in
the House of Commons, however it is unlikely that
the mainstream media will pay much attention or
give much coverage to the debate. Therefore it
is CRITICAL that pro-family Canadians get in touch
with their local MP and ask them to support the
motion. The more MPs contacted in the House, the
more attention will be focused on this critical
issue, and the greater the pressure on the government
to act. Due to short notice we should call immediately.
Specifically, ask your
MP whether he or she will be in the House of Commons
to participate in the debate. Will he or she support
the motion? Will he or she pressure Health Minister
Rock to introduce NRT legislation?

Some
pro-family activists might like to write a letter
to the editor of their local paper on the subject.
