While the third world practice
of killing baby girls has been strongly condemned by feminist
groups around the world, Canadian feminists are supporting
the sex-selected abortion of females in our own nation.
An article published in the
National Post (June 29, 1999), reported that documents
obtained by Southam News show the federal government plans
to take measures to prevent pre-natal testing for sex
for non-medical reasons. The documents also warned that
some women's groups are opposed to a ban on sex-selection.1
Bonnie Johnson, executive
director of Planned Parenthood, defended her support for
sex-selected abortions by insisting the choice of the
woman must be respected. Elizabeth Hutchinson, president
of the National Council of Women, expressed her concern
that attempting to stop abortions based on gender preference
will open the door to other restrictions on abortion after
the battle to win reproductive choice.2
Healthy Minister Alan Rock
seems totally confused by all this. However, the legislation
on reproductive technologies will likely be introduced
in Parliament this fall.
